Philosophy Designing a private home is like a three dimensional form of portraiture in which the forms, spaces, materials and details in the hands of the architect develop a likeness to the spirit of the owners.

Design of every home and garden starts at a place of understanding oneself.  Who are we?  Where do our instincts and intuitions fall in an infinite spectrum of human spirit?  Are we logical or … romantic, circumspect or … straightforward, nostalgic or… unsentimental? It is the specific collection of such qualities that defines each client’s spirit and provides a “gene bank” that sets in motion the ideas, discussions, drawings and atmosphere of their home.

As architect and landscape architect my response to this human story is not an external matter of style or what something appears to be. It is, on the other hand, a more internal abstract matter of how something feels to inhabit.  It is based primarily on elements of natural light, view, space, movement, materials and a loose poetic fit with buildings from our past – from humble rural villages to romantic country houses.
