Robert Joyce Architecture and Landscape Design is a small design studio with offices in New York and Los Angeles, specializing in the building and garden design of private homes and properties. In practice for over 20 years, the studio is known for large, aesthetically diverse projects that are inspired by the personalities of their owners and the places upon which they are built.
Our design process always involves close collaboration and includes plentiful two and three dimensional studies developed early on to promote client reactions and hone sensibilities. It has been Robert’s experience that all clients can understand their future home and make good decisions if shown vivid ideas in animated perspective sketches, carefully colored details and material samples. Extensive on-site supervision and collaboration with the building tradesmen ensures the drawings fruition. Robert is actively involved in all phases of each project and our team of architects and designers is uniquely skilled to produce all detailed drawings and specifications required for custom building.
Educated as an architect and landscape architect, Robert brings design continuity to every project, from early site decisions through to interior finishes and hardware. This unusual perspective makes the many parts of each home feel interconnected and inevitable. A common visitor’s response to new projects is that the house looks as if it belongs… like it has always been there.
In addition to an interdisciplinary program at the Yale School of Art & Architecture, Robert’s studies in architecture and site design include Università degli Studi in Florence, L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Fontainebleau as well as furniture and decorative arts studies at the Attingham Summer School in London. The opportunity to live, study and practice in Europe early in his career marks Robert’s sensibility and a more inclusive approach to design. Sketch books from these experiences document a keen interest in light, landscape and the way in which great buildings exist upon the land.
Through his client’s houses, Robert has had the good fortune to collaborate closely with some of the most significant interior designers of the time, such as Naomi Leff, Thomas Britt and Bunny Williams. Their broad stylistic range speaks to the diversity of Robert’s work. His knowledge of furniture and the decorative arts and how rooms “live” has allowed him to enjoy the significant role an interior designer plays in shaping a home, and he believes that all great homes are always the result of many people’s good ideas.
The studio is proud to announce the 2009 selection of two homes to be photographed and published by Architectural Digest.
